Success lessons from the founders of Google
Everyone knows the success story of Google. Its co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin are considered to be the best minds with outstanding business capabilities who built the world’s most valuable company. The mantra of their success and lessons they offer are equally useful. Here is what I learned reading about them.
• One doesn’t need formal education to be successful. Just take advice and learn from successful people.
• Think big; Think long-term. Google is a by-product of big-picture thinking and a long-term vision.
Many products and solutions that Google offers today, or will be offering in future, were merely imaginary or impossible when they were conceived.
In the backyards of Google, the teams were working on many of these futuristic ideas, thinking big with a long-term vision.
• Believe in your idea even though you may not have the resources. The biggest success stories in the world such as Google, Amazon and Microsoft started in a garage.
Success will eventually come. Having conviction regarding an idea is critical. Had visionaries such as Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos dropped their ideas for lack of resources, we would never have many of the iconic companies today.
• Focus on doing things differently, something uncomfortably exciting. When Larry Page and Sergey Brin entered the “Search” field, there were already five popular search engines.
They focused, however, on differentiating Google from the rest; today it dominates most segments. Most online categories we know today are, or were originally, created or invented by Google.
• Chaos is part of the path to success. There will always be an influx of ideas and the way forward may not always be very clear. However, this is part of the path. As Larry Page had said, at any given stage he had 120 ideas in his head.
He never let them distract him but prioritized what had to be done, and worked on them.
• Always keep learning, hang around with knowledgeable people. It is imperative to surround yourself with knowledgeable talented people. Right from the start the founders of Google managed to rope in people such as Dr Eric Schmidt and gradually expanded the team to include top talent.
All the while, they kept learning from each other and expanded their knowledge-focused team.
• Focus on bringing in a revolution, not incremental changes. Google was hardly interested in incremental change.
Be it YouTube, an App store, online advertising, search, storage, enterprise solutions and others, the focus was to revolutionize the category and offer something that most probably users never experienced or had seen.
• A combination of innovation and an ability to develop a business around it. Innovation is at the forefront of Google. But, more than that; it is their ability or business acumen that has worked so well.
